The New Jersey State Museum celebrates Smithsonian Museum Day Live Saturday, September 28 with FREE Planetarium shows and a variety of family-friendly programs! Join us for: Free Planetarium Shows All Day! 12:00 noon - One World, One Sky 1:00 pm - To Space and Back 2:00 pm - Earth, Moon & Sun 3:00 pm - To Space and Back Gallery Talk 10:30 am and 3:00 pm “Natural History Highlights,” exhibition with Curator of Natural History David Parris. Curator Parris shares his wealth of knowledge as a geologist, paleontologist and scientist. This gallery walk is recommended for general audiences. Delaware Lenape Block Stamped Baskets 11:00 am and 2:00 pm Native people adapted to their environment by using natural resources to produce necessary objects. In this hands-on workshop, families will practice weaving and decorating their own block stamped design. Located in the Learning Center on the Lower Level. Recommended for general audiences. Wampum Necklaces 11:30 am and 2:30 pm Learn about Delaware-Lenape Wampum, how it was made, what it was used for and how it was traded. Families will make a wampum necklace to take home. This craft is appropriate for children 2 and up. Located in the Learning Center on the Lower Level. Art Cart 12:00 noon to 1:30 pm Visit the second floor gallery featuring “American Perspectives: The Fine Art Collection,” and learn about portraits at our art cart. Participants will create their own self-portraits or a portrait of a family member or friend. While you are here, don’t miss "Where in the World is New Jersey? Historical Maps of the Garden State." This exciting new exhibition presents visitors with unknown stories of New Jersey history using the visual splendor of some of the Garden State’s most important historical maps. Suitable for families with children, the exhibit offers the opportunity to design your own map, decorate a compass rose, and put yourself on a map of New Jersey.
