The New York City Housing Authority wrongly allowed contractors to - TopicsExpress

The New York City Housing Authority wrongly allowed contractors to blow off rules requiring they hire NYCHA tenants, an audit released Thursday found. This is a major problem that our elected officials should be contending with. The lax oversight that NYCHA has as it relates to placing their tenants on jobs creates an environment of missed opportunities. Weve been confronted with this issue directly, project labor agreements that state that a certain percentage of local hires needs to be union members...well...how many union members do you think live in public housing? Not many. In addition to that, the unions still make us jump through hurdles to become members, so thats another obstacle that people in our communities have to deal with to merely get work. Weve sought the help of a number of politicians, and the vast majority of them are indifferent to our struggles, nevertheless, we fight on, and proceed on growing our base until they have no choice but to acknowledge the movement.
