The Newport Jazz Festival started in 1954. Yesterday we attended for the third year in a row. Irresistible music, ocean bay side setting, sail boats drifting by, joyful, peaceful, beautiful, diverse crowd of all ages, nationalities, ethnicities, etc -- drawn together by amazing music from the whole jazz spectrum. Highlights for me were the high school all-star big band (!), the fabulous saxophonist Grace Kelly sitting in with Berklee School of Music coming stars led by Ali Amr, the amazing Anat Cohen on clarinet with Bill Charlap, kenny Washington, and Peter Washington . . and the incredible bassist and vocalist Esperanza Spalding and her Radio Music Society. We walked in, sat back in our lawn chairs, took a deep breath and as the music started it was like this huge stress and exhaustion just floated up and away.... Thank you Lord. Highly recommended!
