The News> Opinion> Letter to the Editor We need to give mill chance to make fix Published on August 28, 2014 Share 39 1 Comment Send to a friend Print To the editor, As I listen to what is going on in Pictou County, I think to myself, is this really happening? We are losing jobs at an alarming rate and some small groups want to shut down many of the above-average paying industries that we still have (the power generating plant; mining; the pulp mill; etc.). There are some small groups who have been successful with media coverage and are making our beautiful county sound like a disaster zone. They have been successful in driving tourists away; and what businesses would want to come here? While on Prince Edward Island recently, I was asked by folks from Ontario (with large RVs) if it was safe to take the ferry, and drive through Pictou County. It appears that Pictou County has earned the dubious honour of being the place not to visit. We all want the emissions from the mill corrected! The mill has a plan in place that sounds like a fix, but we need to give them a chance. These emissions have been going on for 50 years, so why would anyone think it can be fixed overnight? The majority of people I have talked with feel the mill should be given a chance; that they have a plan, and the work has been started. Andy MacGregor wrote an article (The rest of the story) published in the New Glasgow News on Aug. 21. It is plain to see that Mr. MacGregor can think and use common sense. Please read this article. If folks would put their energy toward the positives instead of the negatives, maybe we could create an environment that would bring in tourists, businesses, jobs and make Pictou County a place for the future. Pointing fingers and being in the media with all our issues will not bring about positive change. We have many things to be proud of, and we need to talk about all the good things we have. Lets tell the country, and the world, how great we are, not how bad a place this is to live or visit. Lets sell our county and our people to whoever will listen. Lets fill our campgrounds, hotels, B&Bs, stores, shops, etc. with tourists, and attract new businesses instead of driving them away. Raymond Haynes Greenhill
