The Nigerian Medical Association, on Monday in Abuja, gave conditions for the appointment of the Surgeon-General of the Federation, who is statutorily charged with the responsibility of independently assessing the medical fitness of public and political office holders, such as Governor Danbaba Suntai of Taraba State. The President of the NMA, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, who said this during a press briefing in Abuja, also warned against misinterpreting the association’s intervention as an attempt to meddle in Taraba State politics. He said, “Our demand for the Office of SGF is one that is very profound. It is borne out of the need for a diligent analysis of the situation in our country and how to respond to it. The SGF is not one that will be appointed by anybody. His appointment, tenure and job specifications will not be at the whims and caprices of any civilian President. “Rather, it will be solely determined by the National Assembly. In other words, his tenure will be one that will be constitutional and will outlive any officer in government. Unlike the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the SGF should not be an appointee of the President or any other person; but he must have a constitutionally guaranteed tenure. “He must not be a card-carrying member of any political party. The SGF must be a professional of proven integrity. When you talk of AGF and Minister of Justice, they are two portfolios. He is an appointee of government and he’s supposed to also serve the people of Nigeria. Even the Nigerian Bar Association and other Nigerians have been calling for a segregation.” According to him, the price that will be paid by the silence of Nigerians is not going to be well for the country. “The price we will all pay for keeping quiet and not intervening from an objective and unbiased position is to always have continuous crises and distortions or to have people in positions of authority, who do not have the requisite capacity of governance”, Enabulele said. posted on September 03, 2013 at 12:30AM jtnng.blogspot/
