The Norwich Prevention Council and NFA SADD group is sponsoring a family family friendly event, "Take The First Step" on Saturday June 15th at Fontaine Field from 12- 3 PM. It is an effort to raise awareness about suicide prevention and educate the public about services and options. There will be local vendors and service providers making resources available and a walking challenge designed to memorialize loved ones. Health and wellness activities will also be offered. Suicide is the 11th cause of death in the U.S., with over 1,500 attempts each day. One young person dies from suicide every two hours and the elderly are particularly vulnerable. This is an attempt to remove stigma and dispel myths, bringing the subject out of the closet. Education and awareness are vital components in the plan to impact this public health issue. Attendees will also have the opportunity to sign up for QPR training "gatekeeper" training, later this summer.
