The Obama administration has ordered the Syrian government to suspend its diplomatic and consular missions in the US. The suspension requires all personnel who are not legal US residents to leave the country. Talking about the decision, White House Spokesman Jay Carney said “In consideration of the atrocities the Assad regime has committed against the Syrian people we have determined it is unacceptable for individuals appointed by that regime to conduct diplomatic or consular operations here in the United States”. Moscow and Damascus have slammed the decision. The Russian foreign ministry said the decision shows that the US is seeking regime change in Syria and is not trying to resolve the crisis through diplomatic channels. Syria’s foreign ministry also condemned the decision, calling it illegal. It described the unilateral move as a clear violation of Vienna Convention that governs diplomatic relations between nations. On the ground in Syria, the Syrian army gained full control of the strategic town of Ras al-Ayn, in Damascus countryside. The new gain has come just a few days after the army recaptured the strategic town of Yabrud near the Lebanon’s border. What do you think about the new US move against Syria? Do you agree with the Russian interpretation that Washington seeks regime change and is not interested in political solution to the crisis? Is there in any way a link between the US decision and the showdown between Moscow and Washington over Crimea?
