The Obama administration is negotiating a secret “free trade” - TopicsExpress

The Obama administration is negotiating a secret “free trade” treaty with countries in the Pacific and will require the federal government to make severe adjustments to copyright and enforcement laws. Despite the secret nature of this treaty, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative is asking for comments on the treaty’s provisions before it is officially proposed. The New York Times’ editorial board has endorsed the treaty, but acknowledges it’s “worried about provisions on intellectual property that could restrict the availability of generic medicines and grant longer copyright protections to big media companies.” The editorial did note that overall it was a “good deal” and would serve as an example for global trade opportunities.
