The Opera House was constructed in 1879-80 at the site of the current city hall. It burned Jan. 22, 1926. The walls were blue limestone, trimmed with Potsdam red sandstone. The front doors opened into a wide hall, which lead back into the opera house. It housed the mayors office, council rooms, commissioners and clerks offices, police station and recorders office. At the rear of the entrance, on either side, were stairs leading to a hallway above, and from there was an entrance into the town hall and the first balcony of the opera house, with stairs leading to the third balcony. The tower on the southeast corner rose 150 feet and contained a clock and 19-ton bell. In 1906, an addition was erected on the west end of the stage. A large rose window at the front was a copy of one of the windows of Rheims Cathedral.
