The Otago/Southland Scholastics team competed in the National Surfing Scholastics competition held last week in Taranaki, Its been seven years since a southern team has competed. Seven surfers from Otago and two from Southland made the trip and surfed the sometimes tricky to pumping waves over a 4 day period. The surf was great for the 1st two days with 2/4 foot waves at Fitzroy beach. The contest was moved to Back beach for some off the best waves of the comp before returning to a very messy onshore1/2 ft sloppy wind swell for the Finals at Fitzrory beach. Great power surfing saw Elliot Brown taking 4th place in the Under 14 boys division , other finalists were Cario Griffen the under 18 Malibu and Sam Wallace the U18 boogie board division surf ed hard but wasnt to be .Jack McLeod was the next highest placed team member with some good constant surfing to reach the semis, Jacob,Sam and Shani all made it into the 2nd round and showed some good surfing skills but didnt find the right waves to progress ,Jamie surfed great in heat one and some great effort was shown byJohnny and Sarah who paddled about looking for that exclusive high scoring wave. This is a young team still learning their way in the National level but they can be well proud of the effort they all put in. It was a fantastic result for the young team all round as well as a great experience. They can now set their sights to try out and build for next years competition to be held in Gisborne 2015.
