The Perham Girls Basketball team finished their Prairie Lakes Summer League season with a league championship! Playing in Ulen in shortened games, the Yellowjackets got things started by jumping out to a nice lead against Fertile-Beltrami. A short spurt of turnovers led to the Falcons closing the gap but the Yellowjackets did enough to hold on for a first round win. The second game matched up the girls against the new co-op of Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal Titans. The Titans will bring an interesting mix of players this season, including a real nice scorer. She started the game on a tear, putting the Titans up by 9 early, 1-10. The Yellowjackets fought their way back and on a nice run fueled by some steals in the press and finished layups, Perham took their first lead at the end of the game. Great defense and rebounding down the stretch led to a 4 point lead and eventual win. The two wins put the girls in the League Championship at the Ulen site against Hawley. The Nuggets, much like all teams throughout the summer, were without a couple starters, but still had a couple all conference performers as well as a team that knows how to play. The Jacket D was pretty lackadaisical as they gave up a couple of wide open jumpers that the Nuggets knocked down to jump to an early lead. After a slow start, the defense intensity picked up and the Jackets went on a run of their own, led by Sydney Roberts attacking the basket and getting to the free throw line numerous times and knocking them down. The Jackets overtook the lead and salted away the win at the free throw line. It was a great win and a great day of basketball for the Perham Yellowjackets Girls Varsity team.
