The Perry Boys.........this motley crew first surfaced in manchester late 78 about the same time the Mod revival was gathering pace and heading north from London very quickly...the Perry Boys was a name given to young Mancunians who copied the Scouse rivals in wearing sports gear, the Scousers preferring Adidas and mushroom bowl hair styles the mancs preferring the short back n sides with long fringe, known as the flicker..the vast majority of Perry Boys chose manchester City as their team...to the outsider there was very little difference in look to the emerging mod revivalists whom also wore fred perry clothing, both liked the jam new wave music bowie/roxie etc and northern soul....but the Mancs/Perry Boys did not like Mods whom they saw as looking back to the 60s too much with fashion and music..they clashed many times in manchester 79/80....most Mods coming from the towns and villages in Lancashire although there were quite a few mods in manchester...by 1980 the perry boys were now known simply as boys..the confusion over fred perrys proving too much...both sects were smart clean looking and fashionable and now and then joined up against natural enemies rockers punks and the glue sniffin oi skinheads.. many original Perry Boys ended up being firstly Mods then Scooterists who would also turn on the Mods ? confused ?..to me the Perry Boys/casuals were a modern day version of Mods whereas us Mod revivalists looked back to the 1960s for our influences..one famous person who was a perry boy then a mod then a scooterist was Mani who in the last few years as set up Mod events in Manchester, both he and Ian Brown were Mods before turning on them...there is no doubt though in my mind no two styles have ever been as close as the perry boys/casuals and the Mods...the likenesses are all too evident...yet both will deny it..
