...knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation,... (II Peter 1:20 NKJV) Ever hear the statement, I dont need to read any book by man because all I need to read is the Bible? Certainly sounds spiritual. Who could argue with that? The Bible is the final standard of authority. But is there another spirit behind the statement? Could it really be that the person doesnt want to have their own interpretation challenged? Im not sure if youve noticed, But there are a lot of folks who are wise in their own eyes. They say they follow the Bible, but in truth they follow their private interpretation of the Bible. There is a difference. It really boils down to teachability. Will a person yield their opinion to another or others who may have the more accurate interpretation? For me, that is why I read other books. Its not that the Bible isnt the final authority. Its that my opinion may not be the final authority. This is why I like to discuss things with other ministers trained in the Scripture. Sometimes discuss with those who see things differently. It makes me review why I believe what I believe. It causes me to remove my opinion from being inerrant, to understanding again the Scripture is what is inerrant. So, the next time you run into the saint who says they need nothing but the Bible, you can rejoice in their foundation and authority for their life. Just be sure its truly the Bible. And not just a private interpretation.
