The Plymouth Whalers and Family Heating, Cooling & Electrical, Inc. are joining forces on Saturday when the Whalers host Sarnia at 7:05 pm at Compuware Arena in the Whalers Veterans’ Night. Veterans and active military who have served the country are admitted free for Saturday’s game. Veterans coming to Compuware Arena need to show a Veterans ID card and or Veterans Health Identification Card to attend the game. In addition, family members of veterans are admitted to the game for $10. “For us, it’s all about doing the right thing for the right people,” said Dawn Frey, Senior Vice President of Advertising for Family Heating, Cooling & Electrical, Inc. “This time of year is the busiest for us. But we’re never too busy to honor the men and women who have served our country. We’re proud to be a part of Saturday’s game.” Volunteers from the Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund will also be the recipient of our in-game 50/50 raffle, so fans are encouraged to buy raffle tickets to support the good work of the fund. As part of our Pepsi Music Series, in conjunction with WYCD Detroit’s County, local country artist Matt Austin will be performing LIVE before and throughout the game for added entertainment. Family Heating, Cooling & Electrical will also be handing out “Support our Troops” Yellow Ribbon Magnets to the first 500 fans. Veterans Night is in conjunction with the Whalers nightly Veteran of the Game promotion. Each night, a veteran is acknowledged to the Whalers crowd around the ten-minute mark of the first period. Without fail, the veteran receives a standing ovation from the Compuware Arena crowd. The Whalers have been busy contacting local VFW groups, veteran groups and military recruiting stations in the area over the last couple of weeks and are anticipating seeing many well-deserving veterans on Saturday. Saturday’s Veteran of the Game is Daniel Oltesvig. A career military man of 26 years, Oltesvig started his career in 1974 and served over 26 years in the military before retiring in Oct. 2000. Of his 26 years, nearly three years were under combat situations. He was part of the invasion of Panama and Desert Shield/Storm. Oltesvig became a Task Force 2 Command Sergeant Major who fought the FARC the Columbian rebels and anti-narcotics operations. Oltesvig was awarded eight badges, 12 medals and three ribbons during his distinguished military career. Plymouth broadcasters Pete Krupsky and Sean Baligian often interview the veterans during the Whalers television and radio broadcasts. “It’s a real treat interviewing them,” said Krupsky. “The stories they tell are fascinating, heartfelt and never boring. They often seem humbled by the attention, but they all deserve the standing ovation they receive in the first period. It’s the least we can do.” Later this season, the Whalers are planning an entire weekend to honor veterans. On Friday, Jan. 30 and Saturday, Jan. 31 it will be the Plymouth Whalers’ second annual Military Appreciation Weekend at Compuware Arena. The jerseys will be auctioned off, with proceeds of the jersey auction, Whalers ticket sales over the weekend and 50/50 fundraisers to benefit the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System.
