The Poinsettia, of the Euphorbia family, is a large shrub or small tree with narrow, brightly colored bracts. The bracts are mostly commonly a flaming red, but can also be orange, pale green, cream, pink, white or marbled, and are commonly mistaken for flower petals but are actually leaves. Indigenous to Mexico and Central America, it gets its name from Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States Minister to Mexico who introduced the plant into the U.S. in 1825. The United States even has a National Poinsettia Day, which falls on December 12, and its popularity over the years has led to the cultivation of more than 100 varieties of poinsettia.
