The Police Federation welcomed a report by cross-party MPs which backs recommendations made in an independent review of the organisation – set to be debated by representatives from across the country. The Home Affairs Select Committee report, published today ahead of the Federation’s annual conference next week, backs the need for reform which is already outlined in the 36 recommendations of the Independent Review of the Police Federation, instigated by the organisation itself, which recognised the need for change. Federation representatives, voted for by police officers in their own force areas, will ensure their voices are heard during robust debate at the Federation’s annual conference – focusing on the recommendations which include suggestions for the reform of structures, finances, accountability and culture. Steve Williams, chair of the Police Federation, said: “We look forward to discussing reform and we are pleased to see the HASC report supports the main principles of the independent review. Work has already begun since the review published its recommendations in January this year, and we are in a good position to change as an organisation and take the opportunity to ensure we remain a credible voice on behalf of our members.” Keith Vaz, chair of the HASC, said that change needed to be implemented; a fact backed up by the research already presented in the review where 91 per cent of those surveyed in an Ipsos Mori poll said they would like to see change in the Federation. He added: “The Federation must seize this opportunity to reform without delay. Our police service is the best in the world but its reputation has been extensively damaged by the Federation suffering a sustained period of self-inflicted harm. I hope that, with these reforms, it can move forwards to become, once again, the powerful and respected voice that our police officers, and the country, expect and deserve.” Follow debates at conference on the Police Federation website and via Twitter #pfewconf2014
