The Political Leader of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party - TopicsExpress

The Political Leader of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), the Honourable Gaston Browne, has applauded the High Court decision of Wednesday, November 6, 2013, in declaring unconstitutional the several amendments made to the Representation of the People (Amendment) Act 2001 which stripped the Supervisor of Elections of all of her powers. The Honourable Gaston Browne has made it very clear that the Supervisor of Elections is a constitutionally-protected position that was built into the supreme law of Antigua and Barbuda, in order to ensure free and fair elections always. The attempt by the UPP Government to pervert the intent of the Constitution of Antigua and Barbuda has been thwarted by the High Court of Justice, he has noted. Comrade Browne has said that democracy is saved by the Courts of Antigua and Barbuda once again, and by the superior advocacy of the ABLP. The written decision of Justice Henry was not immediately available at 9:00 am on Wednesday morning, November 6 2013, the time of the announcement in the Court; however, Comrade Gaston Browne has noted that a more substantive pronouncement will follow when the decision is available. The ABLP applauds the people of Antigua and Barbuda for their patience and support, the Political Leader has said, and cautions that every lawful act to defeat unconstitutional decisions by the oppressive UPP regime to steal the elections will continue. Two other important decisions are yet to be rendered by the High Court. A decision on the gerrymandering of boundaries will likely be rendered before the end of the year; and a trial is scheduled on December 4, 5 and 6 in a matter having to do with the unlawful re-registration of voters. The ABLP hopes to succeed in each and every one of these constitutional challenges, the political Leader has said.
