The Power of Praise by Sheldon Bass “And let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare his works with rejoicing.” (Psalm 107:22 KJV) The recurring exclamation of Psalm 107 calls people everywhere to acknowledge the God of creation, by offering thanks and praise to Him. “O that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!” The Psalmist points to the deep-sea sailors, who’ve experienced the tremendous might of the ferocious sea, and witnessed deliverance by the hand of Him who created and rules over it. These have known the helplessness and fear—the giant roiling waves, hundreds of kilotons of violent water, with no land in sight. Blackened skies hide the navigational constellations above. The driving wind, capable of stripping control of the vessel from its helmsmen, leaves only one option: Call upon the Lord, the Master of creation for mercy and deliverance. “Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble and he brings them out of their distresses.” (Vs-28) With the power of drought and flood in His hand, God reigns over all the earth. He can bless and He can withhold blessing. A fruitful harvest or famine is determined by Him. He opens the womb to bring forth children or He dams it up to be barren. Flocks and herds are greatly multiplied. And they can be swept away in an instant. Bank accounts can swell to overflowing, and can be taken away in a blink. He can grant us favor with others, or blacklist us. What determines which action He will take? This Psalm makes it clear. The answer lies in our acknowledgement of Him. The arrogance of self-sufficient thinking hardens the heart, whereas gratitude and praise incurs His blessing. “Oh that people would praise the Lord!”
