The President of GENA just came on to TOSPSB site explaining about why they changed the traffic pattern on 2200 Shunk. He wrote, Gaetano Piccirilli Im the duly elected President of GENA and I support the testing being done at this corner. The neighbors and GENA do not believe that the nations largest retailers should be dumping their traffic onto our residential streets. The position has nothing to do with Girard Estate being a community of wealth. Thats a laughable statement. In fact, GENA battles the same quality of life issues that many of you do. We are actively fighting blight and work on zoning issues out in the open. Our members are concerned about pedestrian safety and we can show videos of hundreds of cars rolling through that stop sign, up 22nd street. Yes, rolling through. Not stopping, but rolling. This is particularly the case on weekends when our children our out playing. Many of you do not live on Shunk or 22nd Street, or in the Girard Estate community. GENA does not interfere in the issues other communities face, but we do partner with several civic organizations to further quality of life issues. If you have suffered the inconvenience of going down Oregon Ave. or Passyunk Ave., more appropriate high volume thoroughfares, I apologize. But the folks who live on the affected blocks thank you for the added 2-5 minutes of your trek home. We thank you because this is our South Philadelphia Street and we are testing to see if it can be taken back. If you want to openly debate the issue with me, in a public forum, with notice to the residents of Girard Estate present, I would be happy to do it. In the interim, I again thank you for the slight inconvenience for the safety of my child, the children of Girard Estate, the children who attend GAMP, and our seniors. This was my reply: Oh I totally understand now. Youre against the retailers that generate revenue for the area and dont want them DUMPING THEIR TRAFFIC INTO YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD. The traffic you speak of is the residents of this city. We are not TRASH that is DUMPED into YOUR neighborhood and deserve the right to pass through it like we have for over 100 years. WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? Its more than a slight inconvenience. Especially for the elderly that use the shopping center that come home that way. I refuse to debate with someone that calls the residents of this great city TRASH that is DUMPED into YOUR Neighborhood.. (AMF)
