The President of the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has triggered condemnation by suggesting that a refugee who, while in Australia, assaulted and killed his pregnant partner and unborn child should be released into the community. Indonesian refugee John Basikbasik served 7 years for the gruesome manslaughter, but rather than being released into the community like other inmates, was sent to immigration detention for an indefinite period of time. The AHRC President argues that this is a breach of International Laws against arbitrary detention, and has called upon the government to release him and pay compensation for the time that he has spent in immigration detention after serving his time. What are your thoughts, should refugees be released into the community like other inmates once they serve their time in prison? Or should there be special rules just because they are refugees? Our latest blog post has more.
