The Press Release Bio of Judge Audrey Van Alst for your reading pleasure. Judge Audrey Van Alst is seeking election as 84th District Court Judge in the November 4, 2014 election. She currently is the presiding Judge of the 84th District Court for Wexford and Missaukee counties. Last October, she was selected after a rigorous review process from a pool of six highly qualified attorney applicants, and appointed by Governor Snyder to fill the seat vacated by David Hogg. She was sworn in on November 4, 2013. Judge Van Alst earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Central Michigan University, and a Juris Doctor from Thomas M. Cooley Law School. She graduated with distinction, receiving Certificates of Merit in Taxation, Civil Procedure, and Alternative Dispute Resolution. She completed the Family Law Certificate Program, received the prestigious Martindale-Hubbell preeminent AV Peer Rating, and was named a Top 10 Attorney by Michigan Lawyers Weekly. Judge Van Alst began her legal career in 1995 as a solo practitioner in Cadillac where she developed a successful family law practice serving mainly Missaukee and Wexford counties. In addition to her private practice, Judge Van Alst dedicated herself to public service acting as a Public Defender with the Wexford County Probate Court for 15 years. Prior to assuming her current position, Judge Van Alst served as Friend of the Court for Wexford and Missaukee counties. She was appointed Attorney Magistrate for the 84th District Court handling Small Claims Court cases, Traffic Hearings, Arraignments and Warrants. Despite her busy legal career, Judge Van Alst also served the community in her roles as adjunct faculty at Baker College, speaker at numerous community and school functions, host of student job shadowers, mentor for new attorneys and advisor to the Legal Advocate at the Family Resource Center. She has been Secretary and President of the Wexford/Missaukee Bar Association, is a Wexford/Missaukee Community Corrections Advisory Board Member and a Rotarian. Judge Van Alst seeks to maintain the effective application of her character, experience, abilities and skills to meet the needs of the Court and the professionals and citizens who come before it. As Judge, her commitment is to treat all court participants with respect, fairness and dignity. Judge Van Alst listens carefully to both sides and makes the best decision based on the facts presented and applicable law. She feels grateful and honored to serve our communities as District Court Judge and states: “The District Court is a high volume court which requires exceptional organizational skills. I have experience on the bench, first as the Attorney Magistrate and now as the District Court Judge. I look forward to continuing to faithfully and impartially perform the duties of my office.” Judge Van Alst grew up in Cadillac and graduated from Cadillac High School in 1980. Together with her husband, Barry Tufford, they enjoy a large blended family and active lifestyle. She loves spending time with family and friends, traveling and engaging in non-profit, fund raising and community events.
