The Prince George’s County Police Department is investigating a police-involved shooting in Northeast Washington. The Special Investigative Response Team (SIRT) is leading the investigation. On January 22, 2014, at about 5:45 pm, patrol officers responded for an armed robbery in progress in the 3300 block of Walters Lane in Forestville. At least two suspects entered a liquor store and demanded cash while holding an employee at gunpoint. Fearing for his safety, the employee complied. The suspects then sped off in a minivan. Patrol officers responding to the scene saw the minivan driving in the area. When the suspects refused to stop, officers pursued them into Washington, D.C. The suspects lost control of the minivan and crashed into a utility pole on Clay Place near 57th Street in Northeast Washington. At least two suspects then ran. The preliminary investigation reveals the officers confronted the suspects. During the confrontation, a PGPD officer discharged his duty weapon. An armed suspect was struck by gunfire, however its not clear if the suspect shot himself, or was struck by the officer. The suspect is in a Prince Georges County hospital tonight. A second suspect is in the custody of the Metropolitan Police Department, awaiting extradition to Prince Georges County. A handgun and money believed to be from the robbery were recovered on the scene of the crash. The involved patrol officer is a six-year veteran of the Prince George’s County Police Department.
