The Principled Conservative All this crying about conservative principles and values going on around the tea party and republican groups is such a waste of time. Principled Conservatism died many years ago assuming it ever existed at all. No matter how hard you try you will not find a principled conservative politician running for office and for good reason. Voters do not vote principles they vote self interest period. One glaring example of the hypocrisy of the conservative voter is the issue of minimum wage. The conservative voter will say that government has no constitutional right to be involved in wages at all and wages and a minimum wage should involve no one other than the employee and employer yet it is somehow OK for the government to become involved in wages for overtime hours. That my friend is a position based on self interest not principles. Then you look at the issue of welfare and big government. The middle class conservative voter would gladly do away with all welfare programs that benefit the poor as long as the middle class programs are not touched. middle class welfare is as costly if not more costly as any of the programs for the poor. The middle class don’t like government handouts so the conservative politician plays the deception game with them and calls middle class welfare refundable tax credits. That what allowed Reagan to proudly proclaim that he was allowing the tax payer to keep his own tax dollars through the EITC. The biggest lie in history made Reagan the conservative roll model for today’s presidential hopefuls. Then we have the farm programs in order to keep milk and bread on the store shelves at a reasonable price. Probably spends more than 5 tax dollars for every dollar it saves the consumer but that’s OK everyone likes the farmer and without those payments everyone would have to milk their own cow and make their own bread. Oh well so much for principals. People do as people do and if they vote at all they vote for self interest.
