Supporting “The Best of The Old and The Best of The New” as we “Integrate Solid Old School and Creative New School” elements into contemporary and progressive 21st Century agency and organizational paradigms for our partners, clients, and friends. --The library, information, radio broadcasting, general business, and non-profit sectors are operating in the throes of an historical and significant evolutionary period of time. Many elements have come together in a perfect storm to cause this situation: changing customer needs and expectations, the digital/technological/information revolution, new workplace practices and procedures, an American society in transition and the challenging realities of shrinking budgets and available resources. As a result, these variables are encouraging and causing organizations, agencies & companies to contemplate planned and progressive organizational change in order to insure a smooth transition in the direction of solidifying a successful, productive, progressive and vital long-term future. --In todays challenging public and private sector world, many organizational entities are doing things they never thought theyd do to stay competitively vibrant and meaningful within their respective sectors. --For-profit and non-profit agencies are reinventing themselves for the sake of sustainability. Organizational models require flexibility in the ever changing landscapes of our towns, cities, counties, communities, regions, marketplaces and service areas. Flexibility will allow libraries, radio stations, small businesses and the non-profit sector to truly address the unique needs of the communities they serve. Flexibility will position these agencies as instruments of valuable community/marketplace solutions...whatever the challenge. Funding and resource availability has decreased for most organizations and individuals over the past few years and this trend should continue for the most part. Competition has heated up for many types of traditionally oriented modeled organizations as new types of entities enter evolving marketplaces as service providers. The Business Incubator: A Caique-Mersey Group Initiative An evolving program initiated by The Caique-Mersey Group, LLC designed to support the successful development of entrepreneurial companies and/or non-profit/educational/public service organizations through an array of support resources and services. A Caique~Mersey Group Radio Station Snapshot Elements of a Good Radio Media Outlet Organization: --Though the radio station business model is a relatively complex one, operating a successful radio station is not that much different than operating any company or organization that aims towards being successful. But since a radio station company does have detailed nuances that one is not likely to find in many other businesses, there are some things that one can do to ensure that the entity is a successful and profitable radio station business. -- Have a sales-heavy marketing department. Make sure that one has a capable and experienced team in place that can make sales calls for the radio station and can solicit advertising spots and sponsorships. This is the life-blood of commercial radio, therefore ensuring that there is a constant stream of income for the business is essential. -- Don’t over-hire in other areas. This means eliminating or not hiring additional staff if you don’t need them. Staff should have the ability to wear “many hats.” Extra staff can cut heavily into the budget and can be a very big money and time waster. Creating partnerships with local colleges that have broadcasting and media departments can be very helpful to the radio station from a personnel as well as a public relations perspective. -- Be sure to include diverse genres in your advertising and marketing campaigns. As long as the sponsors aren’t in direct conflict with the nature of your station’s personality, always try to include a variety of advertising clients. This gives the media outlet the opportunity to reach more audiences and markets. -- Always have promotions in-place. This keeps listeners tuned in and listening (to ads) and also encourages them to “refer a friend.” -- By staying ahead and aware of new developments in various consumer markets, the radio station should be better able to gauge what the audience and communities so served wants and desires to listen to. This can help the company in designing future marketing campaigns --Successful radio stations (especially those in smaller-sized markets) are not always rated by how much glitz and appeal they have, but more on how they affect their radio listening communities/marketplaces with their music, news, information, etc. If you keep the radio station connected to what’s going on around a progressive local community, county, region and the nation, one should always have a faithful listener base who will tune in to see what the station media outlet has to say. Radio can be a medium for all seasons. While some media display sharp peaks and valleys in their ability to attract and hold audience attention, Radios consistent levels of audience should reach across all four quarters of the year. Whether your marketing goal is short-term impact or long-term share maintenance, Radios historical stable audience base represents a platform for your brands message. Libraries and Library communities The sector is quite diversified from a national perspective. It is a mirror of America: have and have-nots. Many will grow, prosper and evolve. Many will not. There must be a serious movement begun to insure progressive organizational/operational structures are in place in order to insure intelligent adequate and consistent funding and resource allocation from the local, county, state and federal level. All levels of government need to be in-sync with one another to insure success. Libraries need to be centers of learning and civic discourse. Libraries need to complete the American promise of learning for all, and we need them more than ever in our rapidly changing communities. The society is replete with a growing diversity and culture. Cities need to be entrepreneurial by nature, the gateway between areas north and south. Towns, Cities and Counties need to have growing tech communities with talent. Libraries can be a powerful element binding people to regions. Libraries should play a role an area’s potential or real progressive growth momentum. Libraries have long been portals to new worlds, unlocking vast storehouses of knowledge. Now, in our digital world, when knowing things in real-time can spark an explosion of innovation, libraries are even more important. They’re essential. We owe it to our future to take advantage of the possibilities. Changes: Libraries have been societal institutions for quite a long period now. Many question their necessity in our modern era. In an ever more digital and connected world, do we still need places of books in our society? If libraries aren’t about books, what are they about? In Expect More: Demanding Better Libraries For Today’s Complex World, Professor David Lankes discourses that to prosper and evolve, communities need library agencies that go beyond infrastructure and beyond traditional services and resources. The American nation needs to expect more out of libraries. They need to represent and be associated with such themes as learning, advocacy, and economic development. Radio and Local Media and Business These entities in general must make changes in order to endure and grow and evolve progressively into the 21st century. As an example, if radio is going to survive, it needs to get back to being live, local and getting involved in the community. Radio works best when it talks to individuals on a one to one basis. Radio broadcasters face being squeezed off the dial as stereo makers offer an array of new apps with thousands of new listening options in new cars. A far cry from local AM/FM sets of the past, the latest units not only offer satellite or HD radio, but apps that bundle signals from Internet radio broadcasters across the country. The result is that conventional broadcasters are being forced to adapt by emphasizing quality local or targeted content, working different distribution channels or maybe becoming part of a bundle themselves. The competitive path will only get tougher as the newest stereo units arrive either through new car purchases or the aftermarket. AM/FM broadcast technology, will be much more under the gun as content is now king. Having a good signal and a transmitter does not guarantee that a radio station will be successful. The large array of listening choices is hastened by the arrival of Internet-based radio that allows shoestring upstarts to compete against big-money broadcasters, much as magazines and newspapers are under assault on the Web by bloggers and other content creators. The Future Agency Administrators, Managers and Staffers can deal with evolutionary environments with one of two mindsets: one can do nothing and continue with a status-quo mentality of “doing business as it has always been done” or one can engage in a serious planning process that involves the organization & the community/marketplace in sustained smart discussions about what the organization in question could and should become. Every community/regional service area is most unique and so is every working agency. The smart planning process will ultimately provide the framework for all stakeholders to work together to create a functional & dynamic vision of the future and a clear understanding of its evolving role in reaching its ideal developing operational structure. The future is constantly unfolding, relentless, and happening whether we want it to or not. It will happen whether or not members of the library, information, radio, media, business, music, government and non-profit sectors agree to participate. We encourage and hope that the right decisions are made. Working with a progressive framework and strategy in place is ultimately the correct and essential move.
