The Public Safety Building (PSB) project will provide a replacement facility for the SFPD Headquarters and the Southern District Police Station, currently located at 850 Bryant (the Hall of Justice). In the event of a major earthquake, this building is not expected to be operational and it is essential that the police command structure be fully operational immediately after the “Big One”. The Public Safety Building provides the necessary structural and operational resiliency to enable police leadership to promptly and properly coordinate public safety services in the city for decades to come. The District Police Station plays an equally critical role in providing public safety responsive to the needs of residents of San Francisco. This station deploys the men and women working the front line – typically and especially after, a major catastrophic event. As first responders they maintain order during difficult situations and work cooperatively with other first responders including the Fire Department and the Office of Chief Medical Examiner. Towards an enhanced response capability, the PSB will also contain a fire station to serve the growing Mission Bay neighborhood.
