The Queensland State Government missed the deadline for a UNESCO report into the protection of the Great Barrier Reef. Source: News Limited UNESCO has proposed to list the Reef as a World Heritage Area in danger unless Queensland and the Federal Government can convince it via a strategic assessment they are protecting it from industrialisation. Last year UNESCO found the Commonwealth and state governments had failed to set limits or enforce approval conditions on development. A departmental briefing for Environment Minister Andrew Powell obtained under Right to Information laws, says concerns were raised by Commonwealth staff about the poor quality of the work, especially in relation to Queensland failing to make commitments to targets on specific environmental matters. The documents show former federal environment minister Tony Burke pressing Queensland to better protect the environment by identifying priority conservation areas where development would be restricted or excluded. The Commonwealth also asked Queensland be more specific about outcomes for matters such as marine turtles, threatened species, migratory species and national heritage places. heraldsun.au/news/national/report-to-unesco-on-protection-measures-for-great-barrier-reef-late-and-poorly-written/story-fnii5v70-1226711971668?
