The Quran prohibits holding women against their will, prohibits raping women, prohibits being harsh to prisoners or killing them (the Muslims of the Prophets time were known for being so kind to prisoners they treated them better than themselves), prohibits the idea that one person can be used in exchange for the crimes of other people (and this is why its wrong according to Sharia in killing American journalists for crimes of American foreign policy), and states that if you kill one innocent person its like you killed all humanity and if you save one innocent person its like you saved all humanity. The Quran calls the Prophet Muhammad (sa) a mercy for the universe. He was gentle in nature, and would often shed tears in prayer and be kind to animals, to the environment, and even to non-Muslims. In the early days when he was persecuted in Mecca, he told Muslims I have not been commanded by God to fight them and just bore the persecution with patience. In the Madinan period, he told the Muslims that you should not WISH to fight and that one is not strong who can fight others but one is strong who can control his anger. The Prophet passed by a Jewish funeral and stopped there, and a Muslim told him that it wasnt a Muslim funeral, but the Prophet said was he not a human being? The Prophet said show mercy to those on earth and the One in the Heavens shall show mercy to you. The Prophets very nature was against vengeance and revenge. After years of brutal suffering at the hands of the Quraysh in Mecca, when he came back to conquer Mecca with an army of 10,000 Muslims, he gave every single non-Muslim in Mecca amnesty and forgave every single one. To seek violent vengeance with fiery hatred and anger is an aspect of Jahiliyyah (ignorance) and not Islam. This is the reality of our Prophet and his faith. Islam started as a spiritual religion and not as a tyrannical political ideology that sought to seek sovereignty over all people and kill everyone. ISIS defies every known law in the Quran. The greatest Jihad (struggle) in Islam is to purify oneself and remain steadfast against the carnal self (called the id in psychodynamic psychology). The lowest Jihad is self-defense in the face of extreme religious persecution. It does not however refer to violent revolution; and centuries of Islamic scholarship bears witness to the fact that Muslim reformers and scholars were against rebellion and revolution (Ibn Taymiyyah is just one of the scholars who agreed with this). ISIS is un-Islamic and goes against every principle in Islam. It is a barbaric medieval minded cult of violence, nothing more. #NotInMyName
