The Rattlesnake beans were a disappointment. I wanted to like - TopicsExpress

The Rattlesnake beans were a disappointment. I wanted to like them because the baby beans taste great raw. Sweet and tender and crunchy. Theyre great to snack on in the garden, or to pick a handful for the kids lunches. But the flavor or texture of the bigger beans isnt as good as my old favorites, Dragon Tongue and Roma. Or my newly discovered fave, Kentucky Blue. I found a wonderful bean at the farmers market last year. He called it Worchester Bean, but it appears to be an October bean. It had a strikingly beautiful color, shelled fast and easy, and had a great flavor. I begged him to sell me some seed and he gave me enough to plant 200 feet. I had problems with my seeder so it came up kind of spotty. I was afraid it was going to be a total loss but it turned out to be very prolific. Its going to be a staple in my pole bean lineup. Along with my best favorites, Good Mother Stallard and Violets Multicolored Butterbeans. I love pretty beans. Last year I discovered that Carol Deppe was shockingly wrong about the flavor of Hutterite. It has a smooth, creamy texture, reminiscent of split peas, but with a much better flavor. Im hoping its as easy to grow as it is to eat. Its forming pods now and looks like itll make a good crop. Im also trialing 21 Pea, Red Noodle bean, and Insuks Wang Kong. Any standouts in your garden this year?
