The Re-Org Trust Trip to Spain to assist Sarah and Mario Reid took place last weekend. Volunteers from UK, Gibraltar and Spain gave up their time to help a veteran serviceman and his family during a particularly tough time in their lives. Sarah is terminally ill with a very aggressive brain tumour. 20 volunteers took part in 4 days of much needed maintenance and minor construction work at Sarah and Marios house in southern Spain. Most of the volunteers were at the house by midday on Saturday and work started immediately on the excavation of the rocky soil bank to construct a retaining wall that would improve wheelchair access to the rear of the property, giving views of the garden. Other building works were also started and the maintenance of the garden really got underway on Sunday. A team of very hard working and enthusiastic plant experts pruned, cut back, replanted and generally attacked big sections of vine growing out of control, numerous plants and metres of beds to be weeded and cleaned out. A wall with failing render was chipped clean, scored and re-rendered. 3 cubic metres of olive wood was chopped and sawn to size for firewood and the whole of the outside space was given a huge tidy up. The list of other tasks goes on. Throughout the 4 days the spirit of all the volunteers and the sparkle in Mario and Sarahs eyes were really what has made this whole event so worthwhile. Thank you to all the contributors, the volunteers, the helpers, the financial contributions, the donations, the words of comfort and best wishes for Mario and Sarah. I hope that in some way we have made a difference and brought some small piece of happiness to their lives.
