The Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program for Practitioners, Scholars & Journalists around the World Deadline: 15 October 2014 The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) invites applications for the Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows program. The Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows Program is a federally funded, international exchange program that offers practitioners, scholars, and journalists from around the world the opportunity to spend five months in residence at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), in Washington, D.C. The fellows will undertake independent research on democracy in a particular country or region. While in residence, fellows reflect on their experiences; engage with counterparts; conduct research and writing; consider best practices and lessons learned; and develop professional relationships within a global network of democracy advocates. Fellowships include a monthly stipend, health insurance, office space, research support, and round-trip travel to Washington, DC. Activities Conduct independent research and writing while reflecting on lessons learned; Engage in capacity-building seminars and workshops; Exchange ideas and establish contacts with counterparts in Washington, D.C.; and Impact democratic development in their country, region or field through presentations, projects and products. Fellowship Tracks Practitioner Track: [Five months in duration and culminate in a report, short article, op-ed, handbook, or another product, as well as a formal presentation of the fellows analysis and ideas] Open to democracy activists, civil society leaders, human rights defenders, journalists, and others who work on the front lines of democracy. he program provides practitioners with a needed break from their daily routine so that they may reflect on their work, exchange ideas and experiences with counterparts in the United States, and reevaluate techniques for building democracy in their country of origin. Scholar Track: [Five months. Scholars make at least one public presentation of their work and complete a substantial piece of writing (typically an article or book) for publication] Open to scholars, university professors, and researchers (applicants are expected to hold a PhD or academic equivalent at the time of application). Applicants for this track may be scholars from emerging and aspiring democracies or accomplished scholars from the United States and other established democracies. Eligibility Criteria Applicants can be the citizens of any country. Applicants must be proficient in the English language Topics must focus on the political, social, economic, legal, or cultural aspects of democratic development Applicants must agree to be in residence at the International Forum for Democratic Studies in Washington, D.C., during the year for which they are applying for a fellowship. All application materials must be submitted in English. Fellows’ primary product may be in their native language, but they should have a solid command of written and spoken English for general communication purposes.
