The Red Wing and Devils game tonight had more twists and turns then a county fair roller coaster as the Wings defeat the Devils at the “Joe” 7-4. It was also a big night for David Legwand, the Grosse Point native who was acquired at the trade dead line from Nashville as he got his 1st goal and points as a Red Wing. He got 3 points on the night courtesy of 1 goal and 2 assists. The top line of Legwand, Gustav Nyquist and Johan Franzen accounted for 4 goals and 11 points on the night. Detroit got the 1st 2 goals of the game to go up 2-0. Brendan Smith scored a goal in the 1st period with assists going to Nyquist and Franzen. In the 2nd period Franzen scored the 2nd goal with Nyquist and Legwand getting an assist on the goal. Things looked good for the Wings but then the first twist of this wild game took place. The Devils scored the next 3 goals of the game to take a 3-2 lead. The first goal was a shorthanded tally. After the first 2 goals Mike Babcock, the Wings coach called a time out to try to settle the Wings down. The 3 goals the Devils scored came in a span of 2 minutes and 21 seconds. After losing leads in the previous 2 games the game now looked precarious to say the least. However the Wings then took control causing another twist in this game. Detroit then scored the next 5 goals, 3 of them in the 2nd period. The 1st goal was from Franzen which was a power play goal and tied the game at 3 all. Todd Bertuzzi and Nyquist assisted on the goal. Then Nyquist scored to put the Wings back in the lead 4-3. Legwand and Jonathan Ericsson assisted on the play. Then before the period ended Kyle Quincey scored to put the Wings up by 2 again 5-3. Riley Sheehan and Danny DeKeyser assisted on the goal. In the 3rd period Legwand got his first goal as a Wing to put Detroit up 6-3. Franzen assisted on the play. Drew Miller then scored a goal with helpers from Bertuzzi and Joakim Andersson. New Jersey added a late goal to make the final score 7-4. Devils goalie Corey Schneider had never given up this many goals in his career. The 3 stars on the night were all Wings and all on the same line. The 1st star went to Legwand. Franzen and Nyquist were the 2nd and 3rd stars respectively. With this being a back to back night for the Wings having played last night in what was a very up tempo game, Detroit showed no ill effects. The Wings are now off until another huge game on Sunday afternoon against the Rangers in the “Big Apple”. This was a huge 2 points for Detroit. It comes in a game where Detroit takes the lead, then gives it away and then gets it back. Strap your sat buckle this could be an indication of how the season will go from here.
