The Red Witch was the very first bar where I got served by a topless redhead, c1966 on West 4th and McDougal, in Greenwich Village. I was a 16-17 year-old runaway from Hampton Beach NH. I was so infatuated by the topless redhead, I asked for a job there. Didnt get hired! This was also the first time I ever asked for a job on my own--lol! So I became proficient at panhandling at the corner of 4th and McDougal when i wasnt playing chess in Washington Square Park, while listening to David Peel And The Lower East side, who would always take up a couple of chess tables for his what eventually became famous Maraamarrraa-juana song! Back during this exciting time I was shacked up (the term of the times) with a girlfriend who who lived on the Upper East Side who was 10 years older than me. She worked at The Hip Bagle, right after Figarros at the corner of Bleeker and Mcdougal. Shed feed me these wonderful pastries, which Id wash down with coffee from Figarros! After several weeks of this, one day my father, and the shrink they sent me to because they thought I was smoking pot, drove right to where I was panhandling. We looked at each other in amazement. I knew it was time for me to go home. So after some chinese food (I was starving!), my father and the shrink drove me back to Hampton Beach ... only for me to run away again!
