The Rockwell painting of the lad reading in bed stirred my memories of books that I read during that period of my life. One that was NOT a classic, but which enlivened my imagination was The Half Crown House by Helen Ashton, a book from the early 1950s that is surely forgotten now. However, this story of the impoverished aristocratic Hornbeam family who are trying to maintain their country home Fountain Court by giving half crown tours introduced a young boy from a small town in Ohio to a world of English architecture, art, and history in an entirely entertaining way. An Embronic Downton Abbey. Here, I learned about Edward VIIs house parties and in passing, about the artists George Stubbs and Angelica Kaufmann. While reading this as a 6th grader, I fell in love with British history and its arts and have never stopped my explorations.
