The Romani people did not leave India by choice. We are largely the result of a genocidal anti-Hindu/ Buddhist assault perpetrated by Mahmud Ghaznavid. He attacked India no less than 17 times in his lifetime. He killed all who would not convert to Islam, ransacked and destroyed Hindu and Buddhist temples, and, to avoid slaughter, an exodus of 500,000 occurred. These are the ancestors of the Romani people. The half million came from many different Indian group. Many were known for being highly skilled warriors and they did make a valiant effort to defend their homeland.
