The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), affectionately known as the Mounties, have appointed the first openly lesbian woman to lead the police force for the province of Alberta Assistant Commissioner Marianne Ryan assumed the command of the RCMP in Alberta on Wednesday after a handover of responsibilities from Deputy Commissioner Dale McGowan. ‘I can’t think of a greater privilege than to lead such a dedicated team of employees who are truly committed to public safety in this dynamic and progressive province,’ Ryan said yesterday. ‘I’m humbled by this opportunity, and I look forward to this next chapter in Alberta’s rich history with the RCMP.’ Ryan told The Canadian Press that she had never had any problems during her long career with the Mounties as an openly gay woman. ‘I think its important to be who you are and the RCMP is a very diverse and welcoming organization,’ Ryan said. I’m very proud to be in the organization because of who we are. Im very fortunate to be able to say the RCMP has always treated me with a great deal of respect. Im very proud of who I am and who my partner is and Im especially proud to be the commanding officer of Alberta.’ Canadas provincial divisions are lead by deputy commissioners who, in Alberta, are overseen and appointed by a board of civilian commissioners. Ryan has been with the Mounties for over 31 years, spending the first 19 of those in Manitoba, and was put in charge of the Criminal Operations Branch for the RCMP in Alberta at the start of 2011. - See more at: gaystarnews/article/alberta-canada-mounties-get-first-openly-lesbian-commander300114#sthash.C5x1Anes.dpuf
