The Russian invasion of Eastern Ukraine highlights a glaring problem with the modern system of nation states: What happens when the population within a nation state are replaced over time by demographic forces, and wish to secede/reform? Theres very little process in place to redraw borders to accommodate changing demographics (as in this case, the ethnic Russian dominance in Eastern Ukraine). The borders of nation states are currently treated as sacrosanct, despite demographic pressures to redraw them. Its especially an issue when an artificial border divides an ethnic group. This is an ongoing matter that will only grow worse as changing demographics put pressure on existing borders, which over time increasingly to not match the population reality on the ground.
