Tonight I watched Fritz Langs first sound film, M, for the first - TopicsExpress

Tonight I watched Fritz Langs first sound film, M, for the first time. It has been regarded as a masterpiece, and I join those who say that.Although Lang was one of the most outstanding Expressionist directors in Germany, this film is not fully Expressionist. Some scenes are. I would rather suggest a slight influence from Gerhard Lambrechts proletarian films, especially in the early scenes. It also resembles the future film noirs. Watch the nightly streets. Althought it is a serious film, Lang does not avoid humour. The leader of the criminals says: The child murderer disturbs us when we work. Lang is, however, polite enough not to go too far. When one of the mobsters is caught the police inspector charges him for murder of a night watchman, iIn the next scene we see the watchman, not only alive, but eating. The German sound films were in the initial stage, but Lang uses this technology to a great advantage. The final scene with Peter Lorre, pleading for release, is great art. https://youtube/watch?v=pyWV0iLJgYw
