The SSA Lacrosse Team ended their 2014 season by hosting five teams in a Jamboree at the SSA fields on May 3rd. The SSA Lacrosse Doves played 18 games during the regular season, ending with 10 Wins, 1 Tie, and 8 Loses. Coach Kevin Power was very happy with this season, especially after a rebuilding effort for the team was required since graduating 10 seniors last year. This season the Doves competed at a varsity level with 7 of the 14 girls being first year lacrosse players, which included five 8th graders, one freshman, and one sophomore. SSA played their first game against Ocean Springs, MS on May 3rd and lost 9-4. However, the team won 10-7 in their second game against LaxChix from the Pensacola/Gulf Breeze, FL area. The defensive players, made up of senior Catherine Sirgo, juniors Allison Dufrechou and Lizzie Hummel, sophomore Jesica Arnold, freshman Hayley Pacaccio, and junior goalie, Valerie Schiro did a great job combining with the midfielders on defense to hold the scoring by these two teams against SSA to a total of 16 goals this week compared to 24 goals allowed last week against the same teams. This allowed the Doves offense more time of possession and more opportunities to score, putting up 14 goals this week compared to 8 goals last week, making the difference in a win. For the offense, leading the way in total scoring for the team in these two games were juniors Madison Power with a total of 9 Goals (G) and Catherine Dubuc with 3 G and 1 Assist (A). Sophomore Beverly Brown had 1 G and 2 A and 8th grader Merrick Bourgeois had 1 G. 8th grader Sarah Drivon led the way recovering 6 Grounds Balls (GB), followed by Dubuc with 4 GB, Power and Brown with 3 GB each, Dufrechou with 2 GB, and Arnold and 8th graders Bourgeois and Anelise Smith with 1 GB each. Brown led the team with 3 Caused Turnovers (CT) followed by Drivon with 2 CT and Power, Dufrechou, and Sirgo with 1 CT each. Power won 11 Draw Possessions (DP) to start play at each half and after goals scored, followed by Brown with 5 DP. The team combined effort was 19 of 33 DP. Schiro had 12 saves as Goal Keeper in these two games. Last month nine players from the Doves combined with several players from Ocean Springs and/or LaxChix to play three games in Pascagoula, MS on Apr 26th. SSA lost the first game to Ocean Springs 11-5, won the second game against Gautier-Pascagoula, MS 15-1, and lost the third game to LaxChix 13-3. Leading the way in scoring for SSA in these three games were Dubuc with 5 G and 5 A and Power with 5 G. Brown and Drivon had 2 G each and Dufrechou had 1 G. The other 8 G were scored by members of the other teams playing with SSA.
