The Saturday Scoop Driving Along the Buffalo Trace Thousands of years before paved roads ribboned through the river valley, herds of bison seeking salt licks stamped out a path along the hills and ridges separating the watersheds of the Licking and Kentucky Rivers. American Indians followed the buffalo traces, creating their own trails. Pioneer settlement roads and trading routes continued along the Indian trails. As trails and paths became paved roads, the original buffalo traces evolved into many of the modern roads we use today, including I-71/75, the Dixie Highway, Route 8 and US 27.
