The Scud was a clumsy, obsolete missile...Saddam launched a couple dozen towards Israel. Militarily, this was the equivalent of a plane dropping a small bomb and flying away: a terrible tragedy for whomever happened to be standing there, but a pinprick in the scheme of things. -Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, It Doesnt Take A Hero Elsewhere in his book, Schwarzkopf would relate a dialogue with a Saudi prince in which he was asked how the US could be friends with both the Arabs and Israel. He rhetorically asked the prince whether a man could have more than one friend, or only one? The prince laughed. Yet Schwarzkopf also made it extremely clear in his book that he truly hated Jews. He relates a probably apocryphal dialogue with a colleague in which he is said to say that before he joined the Army, he was just some self-interested Jewish kid and makes derogatory references to the Israelis that make it clear he does not merely oppose their style or policies but despises them on a personal level. The autobiography makes absolutely no reference to the many years in his early career Schwarzkopf spent working with the viciously evil SAVAK that propped up the Israel-Iran alliance and in doing so made the CIA connections that together with nepotism would be the making of his career. Not that Schwarzkopf wasnt brilliant at what he did - just goes to show how the military works and that the ability to fight wars well amounts to nothing without moral wisdom... and that who is doing what to or for whom in the here and now is a poor representation of real attitudes and how the cookie is likely to crumble going forward.
