The Selected Reserve - Montgomery GI Bill, Chapter 1606 provides educational assistance in the form of monthly payments for qualified soldiers enrolled in VA-approved education and training programs. Eligible soldiers can receive up to $11,412 of educational assistance under this program. Eligibility Requirements An eligibility date is automatically established when the following criteria are met: •Have a six-year obligation in the Army National Guard •Have a high school diploma or GED •Complete Initial Active Duty Training •Serve in a drilling Army National Guard unit and remain in good standing Soldiers who establish eligibility before 1992 have 10 years to utilize their Montgomery GI Bill benefits from their date of eligibility as long as the Soldier remains in the ARNG. Soldiers who establish eligibility after 1992 have 14 years to utilize their Montgomery GI Bill benefits from their date of eligibility as long as the Soldier remains in the ARNG. In additional to college and university programs, Montgomery GI Bill benefits can also be used for VA-Approved distance learning programs, Flight Training programs, and Apprenticeship & On-The-Job-Training programs, such as: Welder, Painter, Maintenance Mechanic, Machinist, Cook, Police Officer, Fire Fighter, Plumber, Roofer, Electrician and other qualifying fields. How do I request eligibility paperwork? Once all eligibility requirements are met, the Education Services Office will produce a Notice of Basic Eligibility, DD Form 2384-1. The form is commonly referred to as the NOBE (pronounced: “no bee”). The NOBE will be scanned into the Soldier’s IPERMS file. How do I Start Collecting Chpt 1606 GI Bill? To collect Chpt 1606 GI Bill, the Soldier must pull their NOBE from IPERMS and give it to the Veteran Affairs (VA) Representative at the school. The Soldier will complete a VA Form 22-1990 Application for Benefits with the VA rep. The school will then complete a VA Form 22-1999 to verify the Soldier’s enrollment. All paperwork is then forwarded to the Buffalo Regional Office for processing. How do I Initiate My Monthly Payments for Chpt 1606 GI Bill? The Soldier must verify their enrollment once a month, every month the Soldier is collecting GI Bill. Enrollment can be verified online through the Web Automated Verification of Enrollment (WAVE) System at https://gibill.va.gov/wave/default.cfm or the Soldier can call 1-877-823-2378. How Much Money Will I Receive Under Chpt 1606 GI Bill? Chpt 1606 rates vary depending on the type of training the Soldier is pursuing. For the most current rates, please visit the Veteran Affairs website at gibill.va.gov/resources/benefits-resources/rates-tables.html Can I Collect Chpt 1606 GI Bill and Tuition Assistance at the same time? Soldiers taking 6 credits or more can use Tuition Assistance and GI Bill at the same time for the same courses. What Will Happen to My Chpt 1606 GI Bill Benefits If I leave the ARNG? If a Soldier leaves an active drilling status and enters IRR or ING, the Soldier’s Chpt 1606 GI Bill will be suspended effective the date they are transferred to IRR or ING. If the Soldier returns to an active drilling status within 12 months, Chpt 1606 GI Bill Benefits may be eligible for reinstatement.
