The Senate released its version of the budget last week containing a wonderful pat on the back for our congenital heart disease efforts. While all other diseases in the part of the CDC budget containing birth defects were funded the same as last year (level funding), funding for CHD surveillance was increased from $2 million to $3 million! This directly reflects the tremendous efforts of our advocates who got out there and shared their story with their Senators, who in turn took this incredible action! The only downside is that this is primarily symbolic. It is very unlikely that the Senate and House Budget will able to be reconciled into a FY2014 budget and we will likely have to continue the budget from FY2013, with the $2M funding. But celebrate nonetheless, our voices have been heard!!
