The Shadow Of God’s Wings Scripture Reading: Psalm 91 Keep me as the apple of the eye; hide me under the shadow of thy wings. –Psalm 17:8 It can get pretty hot in California. There is a sheltered spot on my deck where the sun has focused access, and on occasion the temperature has been higher than the capacity of my thermometer! No one in his right mind would remain there very long. One would look for a cooler place in the shadows. If you ignore the red-light warning of the noon-day sun, you will suffer painful consequences. The tempter tries to lure us into the heat that appears as brightness and warmth. If we sit under his tutelage, we may not realize that the effects of his searing indoctrination are slowly but surely taking hold. We must flee to the shadow of God’s wings. This metaphor is used in the Bible in many places. It speaks of protection, a refuge in times of danger. The wiles of temptation will not overwhelm us there. When Jesus came, the concept of shadow took on a deeper meaning. As he hung on the cross, the sun beat down on him, so that he cried out for thirst. There was no shadow of God’s wings in his hour of need! But when he died, the shadow of his cross fell on many. Has it fallen on you? If you stay in the shadow of the cross, God’s wings will cover you there! What joy to trust the God of heav’n above, Who walked on earth, the highest King of kings, Who gives us refuge in his arms of love To rest beneath the shadow of his wings. In the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice. Psalm 63:7 TGBTG, p. 232
