The Shire of Kalamunda has recently purchased five portable hearing loops to help improve access for people with a hearing disability at key Shire facilities. The hearing loops are now available to enhance customer service at the front counters of the Shire Administration Centre, Kalamunda Library, Forrestfield Library, Hartfield Park Recreation Centre and Peter Anderton Centre in Forrestfield. The micro-processor controlled Portable Induction Loop improves reception of speech and provides versatile desktop induction loop assistance for hearing aid wearers. Residents using a hearing aid simply need to stand in front of the easily recognisable assistive listening system. CEO Rhonda Hardy said, “The Shire of Kalamunda is committed to facilitating the inclusion of people with disability through the improvement of access to its information, facilities and services.” “The newly-purchased user-friendly hearing loops were purchased with the aim of improving the Shire’s customer service to hearing aid wearers who access the Shire’s main facilities,” she said. “People wearing a hearing aid are encouraged to take advantage of the new loops when visiting the five locations. A small microphone in the back of the unit will relay the voice of the person speaking which will be received by the hearing aid.” The versatile portable hearing loops are also available for Shire staff to use at small meetings and discussions with community members and stake holders. Each unit’s electro-magnetic field extends to a 1.2 metre radius but speech has also been picked up clearly over a greater distance. The clarity of discussions will depend on the acoustic design elements of each room, the amount of people and background noise present.
