The Spanish League- Why Is It So Repetitive And Dull? Another La Liga season is upon us and as usual, there will be no surprises. I will make a bold prediction: Barcelona and Real Madrid will end up first and second next year and win all the trophies between them. It is true they score the most goals and play beautiful football with the most creativity and flare, but because of the huge gulf between the top two teams and the rest of the clubs, it makes a mockery of the Spanish league and thus, it can never be considered the best league in the world. While Barcelona and Real Madrid devour the television funds and proceed to buy more star talent, the rest of the Spanish teams sell off their players as the gap widens. The only question left unanswered is which of the two giants will falter and drop points to the lesser teams. Last year we knew after 10 games that Barcelona were Champions, so lets hope, for La Liga’s sake, that this coming season will be a title race that goes down to the wire, because there is nothing else to talk about in this predictable, unbalanced league of two hormone pumped Goliaths and a gang of starving Davids. The entire world has become well aware of this ridiculous setup that even the mere thought of something different occurring is all but wiped out from the public mind. There is no question that the Spanish league plays beautiful football and that when Real Betis play Getafe, it will definitely be an entertaining well played game. The problem is, there is no relative consequence with the result of their match. Although the quality is infinitely better, it is similar to an MLS game in the sense that for many of the teams in the La Liga, the games are all but meaningless in the scope of the season. Sure there are rivalries between teams and Europa spots and other side plots that keep the local fans entertained, but for the neutral fan these are unimportant and will never satisfy them. That is why La Liga will always struggle in the face of leagues like the Premier League, or even Ligue 1 now with it’s massive star appeal, the gap between the behemoths and the plebes is just too wide. Spain must change the way they spread their television funds and create a more competitive and unpredictable league, like they once were when Valencia, or Deportivo La Coruna were winning titles as well and Barcelona was fighting to secure Champions League spots. If they don’t, they will always play second fiddle to the other European leagues, regardless of how beautiful they play and how many Messi’s or Ronaldo’s grace their fields.
