The Special One becomes the Hypocritical One! Mourinho has been guilty of parking the bus, so why was he blasting West Ham for their 19th century football? (plus, a history of his bizarre rants) By Ashley Clements 12:03 30 Jan 2014, updated 15:32 30 Jan 2014 Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is often lauded for his honesty and willingness to take on opposing managers in a war of words but as the 51-year-old accuses West Ham of playing 19th century football in a 0-0 draw a Stamford Bridge, is the Special One becoming the Hypocritical One? To help find out whether Mourinhos brain is starting to be scrambled by his own mind games, Sportsmail has put together a top 10 list of his most controversial quotes to date. From calling Arsene Wenger a voyeur to parking the bus, heres a look a some of Mourinhos maddest moments. VIDEO Scroll down to watch Mourinho discuss West Hams 19th century football 19th century Hammers The Hypocritical One? Speaking after Arsenals 0-0 draw with Chelsea at The Emirates earlier this season, Mourinho said: I think boring is a team who plays at home and cannot score a goal. Thats boring. Because you go to your stadium and fill your stadium in weather like we had last Monday, to see victories. Lets start from the most recent outburst. After his Chelsea side had an astonishing 39 attempts on West Hams goal and still could not find a way past their opponents, Mourinho seemed to accuse Sam Allardyces side of playing football from the dark ages. Speaking after the game, Mourinho said: This is not Premier League, this is not the best league in the world. This is football from the 19th century. The only thing I could bring was a Black and Decker [tool] to destroy the wall. A football match is about two teams playing and this match was only one team playing and another team not playing. Mourinho: West Ham play 19th Century football Fergies new foe English football fans first really became aware of the Portuguese manager when his Porto side knocked Manchester United out of the Champions League in 2004 thanks to a 90th minute Costinha goal and Mourinho sprinted the length of the Old Trafford touchline in celebration. After what would be the first of many duels with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, Mourinho claimed: I understand why he [Ferguson] is a bit emotional. He has some top players in the world and they should be doing a lot better than that. You would be sad if your team gets as clearly dominated by opponents who have been built on 10 per cent of the budget. Parking the bus The Hypocritical One? Mourinho chose not to play a striker against Manchester United earlier this season. After the 0-0 draw at Old Trafford, Mourinho said : My team needs this because it is a team with a lot of talent but at the same time they need to know how to play in difficult circumstances. They know how to think tactically, how to think in a result if the result you want is not possible. For me it was fantastic. Andre Schurrle playing against Evra, Oscar playing in different positions. For me it was fantastic. After his new Chelsea side were frustrated by a solid Tottenham performance in a 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge in 2004, Mourinho coined a new phrase. A frustrated Mourinho said: Tottenham might as well have put the team bus in front of their goal. Sometimes when you are a big club, a very small club comes to your stadium. Tottenham got a point they shouldnt. We wanted to play. They didnt. We wanted to score. They didnt. Every time they just kicked the ball away. It is frustrating for me, my players, for every Chelsea supporter and for every football supporter. We finished with all our strikers on. You dont finish with so many attackers on if the other team are also trying to win it. The next time, instead of having William Gallas and Alexei Smertin on the bench, I will have Adrian Mutu and Arjen Robben. I dont need defenders. Voyeur Wenger Growing increasingly frustrated with Arsene Wengers comments about Chelseas results, Mourinho decided to attack the Arsenal boss with possibly his most controversial comment to date back in 2005. The Chelsea manager argued: I think he is one of these people who is a voyeur. He likes to watch other people. There are some guys who, when they are at home, have a big telescope to see what happens in other families. He speaks, speaks, speaks about Chelsea. Hes worried about us, hes always talking about us. Its Chelsea, Chelsea, Chelsea, Chelsea. I might be worried if my team made a defensive mistake. I shouldnt be worried about what Arsenal did at Tottenham. They are always speaking about the other families. I dont know if he wants my job, I dont know. He loves Chelsea. Barcelona battles In 2005, Mourinho created huge controversy surrounding Chelseas Champions League tie against Barcelona. Following the first leg, in which Didier Drogba was sent off by referee Anders Frisk, Mourinho accused Barca boss Frank Rijkaard of following the official into the dressing room. It was an accusation that was officially followed up by Chelsea and sadly was the catalyst to Frisks retirement from refereeing. Writing in a column for newspaper Dez Record, Mourinho said: When Didier Drogba was sent off (after half-time) I wasnt surprised. I would like Frisk as the ref (for the second leg). Perhaps he would help us like the way he helped (Barcelona) in Spain. Gallas in Guadeloupe Mourinho has always been open and honest about his players. Sometimes this can be to the detriment of the player, as Chelsea defender William Gallas found out after he extended a holiday rather than returning for first-team training in 2005. As you know Gallas had an unbelievable holiday. I hope he enjoyed it very much in Guadeloupe, which I think is a fantastic place to be on holiday, so he wanted to stay there for a long time. The Translator vs The Tinkerman While manager of Inter Milan, Mourinho was offended by comments made by Juventus boss Claudio Ranieri questioning some of his coaching methods. Hitting back, Mourinho said: I studied Italian five hours a day for many months to ensure I could communicate with the players, media and fans. [Claudio] Ranieri had been in England for five years and still struggled to say good morning and good afternoon. He has won a Super Cup, a small cup. He has never won a major trophy. Maybe he needs to change his mindset but he is too old to do it. Old gripes at the Nou Camp When in charge of Real Madrid, Mourinho continued his ongoing fued with Barcelona during a number of huge La Liga clashes and Champions League meetings. In 2011, Mourinho claimed that his Madrid team were preparing to play with 10 men as he believed it was inevitable they would have a man sent off in the Nou Camp during a Champions League semi- final. I have to train with 10 men [to prepare for the Barcelona semi- final], how to play with 10 men, because I go there with Chelsea, I finish with 10, I go there with Inter, I finish with 10 and I have to train to play with 10 men because it can happen again. Diving Drogba No longer in charge of Chelsea back in 2010, Mourinho claimed one of his favourite players was in fact a cheat. I am no longer Chelsea coach and I do not have to defend them any more, so I think it is correct if I say Drogba is a diver. Drogba, Ronaldo, Torres and van Persie are the divers. Who dives more? Who has won more penalties in recent years? But English football is the one that criticises the divers the most. Benitez gave Chelsea mental problems Mourinho can do little wrong in the eyes of Chelsea fans, particularly when compared with the popularity of last seasons interim manager Rafael Benitez. Mourinho and Benitez have had a number of subtle digs at each other in the past and every now and then the old feud resurfaces. Speaking after Chelsea beat Manchester City 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in October, Mourinho couldnt resist but have a pop at Benitez. I watched every game of Chelsea against City in the last year. I saw the game at Wembley, the game at home, the game at City, I saw even parts of the friendlies in the States. Mental. Not tactical. Nothing. Mental. Afraid to assume. Afraid to go. Afraid to say we want to win, we can win. Reacting when losing. So the important thing today was how we started the game.
