The Squid And The Whale - Film Review Set in Brooklyn in the early 80s, The Squid and The Whale gives us an insight in to a rough divorce and how each of the family members deals with the scenario. Bernard (Jeff Daniels) and Joan (Laura Linney) are the parents of Walt (Jesse Eisenberg) and Frank (Owen Kline). Bernard is a University Professor whos writing career is on the wain, but hed never tell you that. And Joan is an aspiring author who is just about to get her big break. When they split up, they decide to take joint custody of the 2 boys and from this point on we are witness to issues that confront the boys as their parents play emotional blackmail against each other using their children as the bat and ball. Even in the hands of intellectuals, the needs of the kids are dismissed as the parents try to get on with their own lives and blame each other when the children act in ways that would be perceived to be abnormal. Solid performances by Linney and Daniels are eclipsed by those of Kline and Eisenberg as they struggle to make sense of a situation that they have no control over. It comes as no surprise that the film, which is Directed by and Written by Noah Baumbauch, is a very personal recollection of his experiences when his parents divorced. 4 out of Sea Creatures Cert 15 81 Minutes youtube/watch?v=JRkK5n2mkvg
