The State Department has been wrestling for weeks with the question of whether the Egyptian military deposing President Mohammed Morsi was a “coup” or not. It matters because if it’s a military coup, then that would legally freeze American aid to Egypt. Well, they finally have made a decision. They’ve decided not to make a decision. Spokeswoman Jen Psaki gave the AP a classic example of Washington double-talk, telling them that the U.S. has “determined that we do not need to make a determination” of whether it was a coup. I get the feeling they were determined to determine that they didn’t need to make a determination. We’ll never know if it was a coup or not a coup. But we can be certain of one thing: Washington is coo-coo.
