The Story of the Cross - Day 8 The Scourging and Crown of Thorns (Matthew 27:26-31; Mark 15:15-20; John 19:1-2) His robe was torn from His body, and His hands were tightly tied to a stone pillar. The beating was horrifying. We know from History that some prisoners sentenced to crucifixion were killed from the scourging itself. The Romans used a torture instrument called a flagellum, in which pieces of sharp metal, glass, stone, and bone were woven into leather straps. Lash after lash pulled away the skin, then the muscle, then the tissue of Christ’s body. Blood was everywhere. Then mockingly the Roman soldiers wove a crown of thorns and with rods beat it down on His head. They placed a purple robe on Him and mock worshipped Him.
