The Strong Takes Over the Weak—stop the cycle, take control and relax those muscles today! Do you know what the strongest muscle in the body is? Heres a hint: The stronger the muscle, the more it’s likely to take over a movement. These muscles can be compared to ‘goons’ or bullies of the body and like so, they are also the least aware muscle types. The direct answer to the question about the strongest muscle in the body is the Masseter, one of the muscles of mastication, or chewing—also known as the jaw muscles. These muscles are a quadrilateral muscle with both a deep and superficial insertions. Serving as stabilizing muscles, they also tend to be very powerful. Strength in general usually involves the capacity for either resistance or exertion. The masseter can generate the largest measurable force of any single muscle. It’s strength and power comes from the fact that its made up of densely packed muscle fibers while also consisting of a very short-armed lever. Today’s quiz challenges you to relax your jaw, take your chin back and learn the answer to this question: Which of the following is not true of the Masseter muslces? a. they connect the upper and lower jaw to facilitate mashing of food while we eat b. they are one of the muscles of TMJ c. they are often the most stressed out; this is due in part to their strength d. If you grind your teeth at night or clench your jaw, you likely have very unhappy Masseter muscles. e. None of the above. While experts explain there are also emotional aspects to this, we suggest that when faced with challenges, obstacles or roadblocks today— to take a pause, take a deep breath, relax your eyes back and become mindful of over tightening of those jaw muscles. This little shift can offer big results in managing happier muscles no matter how big or small, strong or weak. See you for more on nutrition and training tips.
